Co-Ed University Opens in Saudi Arabia
The times they are a ch-changing... even in Saudi Arabia where the first co-ed university was inaugurated this week.
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), named for the king of Saudi Arabia who donated $10 billion to the school's endowment fund, not only allows women attend classes alongside men, but also allows them to do without wearing a veil.
In the past, women could only take classes separately from men. Women will also be permitted to drive to the university and within its bounds.
The king calls the school a "beacon of tolerance" in the Middle East.
"Humanity has been the target of vicious attacks from extremists, who speak the language of hatred," King Abdullah said at the inauguration. "Undoubtedly, scientific centers that embrace all peoples are the first line of defense against extremists. And today this university will become a house of wisdom ... a beacon of tolerance."
Saudi officials hope the postgraduate institution will help diversify the country's economy, which has until now depended on oil.
"With all the natural resources that God has endowed us, the kingdom is keen to diversify its sources of income for the future," Oil Minister Ali Naimi told the Associated Press.
So far 817 students from 61 different countries are currently enrolled, with plans to expand to 2,000 students within eight to 10 years. Thanks to the school's enormous endowment, all students will receive full scholarships and a stipend to help cover expenses. Faculty, who are being recruited from around the world, are also receiving generous salary packages. Just 15 percent of the student body is Saudi Arabian. Of course, it would be nice to see that number go up.
The opening of this university is a huge step forward for Saudi Arabia where Islamic law has long prevented the country's embrace of modern mores and innovation. Let's hope this university is really just the beginning of the globalization of the Middle East and the emancipation of women there.
