'Lindsay Lohan in India' Arrives Online
Lindsay Lohan is turning over a new leaf, according to her Twitter account. "Focusing on celebrities and lies is so disconcerting, when we can be changing the world one child at a time.... hope everyone can see that." That's what the actress-turned-fashion-designer tweeted on December 9 while in India filming a documentary that will soon air on BBC Three.
The documentary, which is called Lindsay Lohan in India, is designed to raise awareness about one of the biggest problems the country faces: child trafficking. In the clip that appeared online today, Lohan talks about what she witnessed at a children's shelter outside Kolkata. At the shelter, Lohan met women and children who had been the victims of rape and exploitation.
At the time of her visit, the actress faced harsh criticism from many news outlets because of outlandish statements on her Twitter page, including claims that she had saved over 40 children in one day. Nevertheless, the Lindsay Lohan that appears in the documentary trailer is subdued, calm and appears to be genuinely moved by the people she encountered at the shelter.
The media may attack Lohan for her attempts to do charity work, but no one can deny that linking Lindsay Lohan's name to a worthy cause that is in desperate need of attention like human trafficking can only raise awareness — and hopefully have a positive effect. The actress has already announced a forthcoming trip to help children in Guatemala, which her mother Dina says will be filmed by Oprah’s network. While I wish she could do something charitable without being followed by cameras, I do hope that Lohan's trips inspire her millions of fans to duplicate the actress' newest role: do-gooder.
