Unsung Holiday
You don’t get a day off from work. You feel like a dork standing on your front steps waving the Stars and Stripes. You can’t say the words Old Glory with a straight face. Flag Day isn’t exactly at the top of your holiday favorites list — we get it. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its charms.If you’re anywhere near Three Oaks, Mich., check out the self-proclaimed world’s largest Flag Day celebration this weekend. Highlights include the world’s largest Flag Day parade (of course), a skydiving demonstration featuring air jumpers clutching American and POW/MIA flags and a performance by P.S. Dump Your Boyfriend (we just liked the name).Not to be outdone by Three Oaks, Troy, N.Y., will hold what it claims is the largest Flag Day parade in the nation. Veterans from every branch of the military walk the parade route, which offers a healthy slice of Americana.John Adams' hometown, Quincy, Mass., has one of the longest-running Flag Day celebrations in the country and will hold its 58th annual parade on Saturday. The following day, the city library will unveil the instantly iconic flag recovered from Ground Zero after the Sept. 11th attacks. The event is sponsored by the New York Says Thank You Foundation and kicks off a national tour of the flag.See, Flag Day is pretty cool after all.
