Gap's Got Shrinkage
George Costanza may have complained about shrinkage, but sometimes, it's actually a good thing. According to this GreenBiz.com article, Gap lowered its greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent in the past five years. It did so through "lighting retrofits, sourcing renewable energy and an energy management program that targets energy-intensive stores."
What's even more impressive about that 20 percent figure is that the company actually exceeded the goal it had set as a member of the EPA's Climate Leaders Program. From 2003 to 2008, Gap had planned to cut emissions by 11 percent. Nearly twice as much shrinkage. Not too shabby.
The company formed an Environmental Council in 2008 in order to improve its environmental performance. And, Gap released its latest social responsibility report last week Friday, where it explained how it's lessening its environmental impact. One of the highlights of that report, according to Gap's press release, was "recycling more than 45 tons of paper, cardboard and containers" from its North American operations.
