Three Cheers for Sustainable Design
Today the Chelsea Piers in New York is host to a fete for leaders of business, nonprofit and other sectors who are using innovative approaches to global warming in New York and other coastal US cities.
The 10th annual Global Green Sustainable Design Awards are organized by Global Green USA, the American arm of of Green Cross International (GCI), an organization created by Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev to work toward a sustainable future by reconnecting people to the environment.
The awards honor advancements in the fields of industry, building, media, nonprofit organizations and public policy that design a more sustainable future. This year's winners are the following.
Organizational Design Award: Ceres, an NGO that promotes sustainable prosperity, represented by Mindy Lubber, president Green Building Design Award: The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, an art- and architecture-focused institution of higher education, represented by George Campbell Jr., president Founders Award: Sebastian Copeland, an explorer, photographer and advocate who uses his images to illustrate the threats we face from global warming Corporate Design Award: PG&E Corporation, a pioneer in developing alternative sources of energy, represented by Peter A. Darbee, Chairman, president and CEO Policy Design Award: Terry Tamminen and Bonnie Reiss, partners, Pegasus Sustainable Century Merchant Bank, who helped organize the Governors' Global Climate SummitA fundraising event, the Global Green Awards support all of Global Green USA's work, including the Holy Cross Project to rebuild New Orleans and the Green Schools Initiative.
