Go Gardening in New York City!

Big cities are not your typical meccas of gardening ... unless you're visiting the northern part of New York City this summer. The New York Botanical Garden, the Big Apple's huge horticultural space in the Bronx, just opened a three-month set of exhibits under the banner of "The Edible Garden," celebrating and educating visitors on all the delicious goodies that can be planted and grown.

To see everything, you've got to allow at least a full day, but the best way to experience this show is to come back several times, in part to see the seasonal difference between what's ripe now and a couple months down the line. If you've got kids, the perfect place to start is the Vegetable Garden, where children can plant and harvest fruits and vegetables. (This is ideal for a city kid that thinks veggies only come wrapped in plastic, sitting in the supermarket's produce section.) There are also a few other gardens, including one that's filled exclusively with herbs chosen by none other than Martha Stewart.

If all that produce makes you hungry, there's also a farmers' market on the Botanical Garden's grounds so you can pick up the freshest goods to take home.

As New York City sights go, this one's anything but the garden variety.
