Go to South Africa for a State of (Cape) Grace
It may seem like it's a million-hour flight from America — particularly if you're curled up in Economy Class — but South Africa may just be worth every second of your long journey. A visit to Cape Town, for example, can easily include seeing historic sights, enjoying panoramic views of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, plenty of shopping, and eating some of the most creative (and delicious!) food around.
One of the most luxurious places to stay in Cape Town is Cape Grace Hotel, a waterfront property that underwent a major face lift last year. It's a fabulous property ... and also has some fabulous initiatives in place, like a program which donates unused guest amenities and food to people in need. There's artwork and furniture crafted by local artisans on the walls, and extensive recycling and conservation in its daily routine. The hotel also trains local unemployed young people to work in its bar and restaurant. For all that good work, Cape Grace has earned a prestigious Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa certification.
Oh, and the beds are super-comfortable too ... which after a day of sightseeing, eating, and shopping in Cape Town — on top of major jet lag — could definitely come in handy.
