Gold Rush!
Here’s a novel (and romantic) way to cut your wedding budget: Pan for gold for your wedding rings.
That’s what Daisy Thurkettle — now Daisy Thurkettle-Roper — did. The British bride has been hunting for gold in Britain’s rivers since she was old enough to stand in them, and she’s hoarded every last flake.
She used them to create one-of-a-kind wedding rings for herself and her husband Martyn Roper, 28, after taking her husband panning for gold in Wales to find the final flakes. It was his first time prospecting.
“I've panned for gold ever since I was about three years old and could stand in the shallows and not get blown over,” she told the U.K.’s Daily Mail. “I’ve kept all the gold I have ever found and there seemed to be nothing more perfect and romantic than using it for our wedding rings.”
She said of her trip to Wales’ River Wenn with her husband: “It was hard work and back-breaking as you have to dig enormous holes but it was worth it. To go to a beautiful river and hunt together for our gold was amazing and I could not have imagined a more perfect preparation for the ceremony.”
The pair then took all the gold flakes to a jeweler, who created two unique bands, worth £600 (about $965) each.
Icing on the (wedding) cake? Guests at the wedding were taken panning for gold, getting their own shot at striking it rich.
