GPS Art: Way Too Cool
Yesterday I was on an airplane and a kind middle-seater offered me his Style section of The New York Times. (I still don't know what that meant, by the way. Either he looked at me and just knew I'd be into it, or it was a cruel, cruel hint.)
Even after a long delay, I was sheerly delighted with the story of Tomasz Berezinksi and Vicente Montelongo — two men who have discovered the art of drawing with their GPS trackers!
You probably have a Global Positioning System (GPS) of some kind in your possession — it could be on your bike, in your car, on your BlackBerry or iPhone or even on your watch. Well, it turns out it can be used for more than just finding directions — imagine if your decision about whether or not to turn was an artistic one!
The Space Invaders dude above and the bunny "with the eyes made out of hilltop parks" below were both done by Mr. Montelongo on his bike GPS and uploaded to EveryTrail.com. "We started in Japantown and worked our way up and down the killer hills near the Marina and Pacific Heights. The satellite was a bit wobbly I guess, although we did wiggle up some of the super steep hills," comments Montelongo on the site.
How awesome is that?? We'd love to see someone draw a huge shape across the bread basket of America on a road trip — like a heart, or perhaps a bread basket.
You can see more of Mr. Montelongo's art on his website at Mexist.com, and upload your own bike trails at EveryTrail.com.
