Dining Out to Help End Hunger
Sure, one of the reasons you go out to eat is because you feel hungry and want that feeling to cease, but that's pretty selfish. What I'm talking about is being selfless when you dine out. And next week, you can do so without even really trying.September 20 to 26 is the 2009 Great American Dine Out, where participating restaurants across the country will be donating a portion of their sales to Share Our Strength, a nonprofit organization with a goal of ending childhood hunger. By going to the Great American Dine Out Web site, you can search for a nearby restaurant. When I did a search in my area, I came up with 75 restaurants, so it looks like I'll have a lot of choices next week. With thousands of restaurants participating, you should hopefully have a few options as well.In addition, online restaurant reservation site OpenTable is helping out, so if you live in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco or Washington, D.C., you'll be able to make reservations at the participating restaurants on the Web site. Also, if you happen to work at a restaurant and want to get involved, there may still be time to do so here. Along with donating a portion of money made during the week, restaurants can also create unique menu items, sell T-shirts or get employees involved in donating.Yes, we're all cutting back these days, but if there was ever a time to spoil yourself a bit by going out to eat with friends, family or, heck, both, next week's Great American Dine Out is an excellent excuse.
