Hate Cancer? Have a Picnic.

This summer, June 17 to July 14, British supermarket Somerfield and Macmillan Cancer Support are teaming up for their third annual Somerfield Big Picnic. What does that mean? It means an excuse to party. Now, the official version of this picnic-fest is only available to those of you in the U.K., but there's absolutely no reason you can't throw a picnic here in the United States and raise money for cancer the exact same way. Here's how it works: Make some tasty picnic dishes or grab some veggies, meats and fish for a VBQ/BBQ, and ask your guests to bring along drinks and a donation to support cancer research. If you're in the U.K., click here to register your picnic. There are other ways to raise money at your picnic, too — host a game and charge an entry fee, raffle something off for 50 cents per ticket, or get a friend to donate a service, like face painting for kids, manicures, or massages for a small fee. Somerfield’s staff and customers voted Macmillan as their charity partner in 2007. Since then, they have raised over £2 million through their Better Together campaign, which seeks to support Macmillan in their ambition to reach and improve the lives of everyone affected by cancer by 2010. We think that's pretty great. And throwing a cancer-research supporting picnic is a superb idea! Everyone knows that no one goes to an event without a theme anymore. Be sure and invite us, now. We love a good party.
