Ginormous Gourd!
What's orange, round and weighs 1,725 pounds? We'll give you a clue: It's not an orange elephant. Give up?
It's what may be world's largest pumpkin ever!
This past Saturday, an Ohio couple, Nick and Christy Harp, attended the Ohio Valley Pumpkin Growers weigh-off in Green Township. According to a story on Fox8.com, the giant gourd weighed in at 1,725 pounds, the biggest pumpkin in world history. (For pics of the pumpkin, see here).
The weigh-off will continue for another two weeks still, but if no one brings in a pumpkin heavier than the Harps', the couple's can claim the title of World's Largest Pumpkin for their gourd.
Growing giant gourds is a hobby of Christy's, and she even competes with her husband at home. This year, her pumpkin beat his by 400 pounds.
Christy says the secret to growing the record-holding pumpkin was in the soil and the seeds. She loaded up the soil with compost, coffee grounds and cow manure and made sure to select seeds with good genes.
Last year, the Harps made boats from their giant produce, but this year, they plan to bring their pumpkin to New York to get it professionally carved. A jack-o-lantern of that size and proportions would sure be pretty impressive.
Alternatively, if the Harps would like to carve up their prize-winner, bake some pies and send them to the Tonic offices, we wouldn't turn them down.
