How Your Children & Teens' Favorite Companies are Giving Back
Got a kid, tween or teen who loves certain brands? Don't feel bad about indulging in your son or daughter's brand of choice if it's one of these companies that actively gives back.
1. Neutrogena's Wave for Change
Neutrogena noticed a growing determination and passion in their target audience — teens — to start giving back. Starting July 17, for every Wave Sonic Power-Cleanser or Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit sold, Neutrogena will donate $1 (up to $200,000) to GlobalGiving. Not only will the money bedonated, teens will be able to help determine which causes the money goes to by logging onto Neutrogena's Facebook page and taking a quiz. "By taking a few minutes to join in, everyone can make a big difference in the world," said Neutrogena Brand Ambassador Vanessa Hudgens.
2. Liberty Mutual: The Responsibility Project
Okay, so this insurance company definitely isn't your teen's favorite brand (slash they probably don't know anything about it or insurance at all), but they may be begging you to change your current provider over to Liberty Mutual once they watch some of the clips on this site. In their newest series, three of Broadway's hottest stars talk candidly about what it means to stay true to yourself and stand up for your beliefs. But not in the cheesy way I just described it, because they're Michael Esper from American Idiot, Kyle Riabko, formerly of Spring Awakening and Hair, and Jennifer Damiano from Next to Normal.
Quiksilver and its female offshoot, Roxy, are the must-have apparel of surfers, skateboarders and laid back youngsters. The Quiksilver Foundation is its charitable, philanthropic way of encouraging "corporate social responsibility and benevolence." Since 2004, it has been committed to enhancing the way of life for communities of boardriders around the world by "supporting environmental, educational, health and youth-related projects." Right on.
It's not just a magical place where you go to make your own teddy bears. Build-a-Bear is extremely committed to giving back to the community — they offer more than ten different ways for children and parents to get involved and give back. The programs range from "Stuffed With Hugs," which helps kids around the world provide other children with bears "in need of a hug" to purchasing a special animal, for which a portion of the proceeds go to supporting literacy, children's health and wellness and domestic pet programs.
5. Challenge Day, MTV
MTV's newest show, If You Really Knew Me, isn't just meant to be watched passively. Each of the 12 episodes is accompanied by a downloadable "activity guide" on MTV.com, which challenges high schoolers to take the same challenge they see depicted on the show. Don't just play into stereotypes; break the mold. Rise to the challenge.
Teen cosmetic fave MAC has been giving back for years through their Viva Glam campaign. This year, they picked two powerful spokeswomen: Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper, a truly inspired coupling who teamed up to help the company raise money and awareness for the MAC AIDS Fund.
7. Show Your Helping Hand, Hamburger Helper
The commercials get stuck in your head for days ("One pound, one pan, one tasty meal!"), but we'll forgive them because Hamburger Helper has been a longtime supporter of Feeding America. Their latest campaign, "Show Your Helping Hand," has a lofty goal: to deliver more than 3.5 million meals to local food banks. Find out how to get involved and help them achieve their mission here.
