Tech Titan Offers Helping Hand to Typhoon Victims
PC maker and technology giant HP has pledged $350,000 from its corporate foundation program to help typhoon victims in the Philippines.
The donation, which will be made to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, is aimed at helping with disaster relief efforts following Typhoon Ketsana (Ondoy) that hit the region on September 28.
“HP and its employees have a long history of supporting those in need, and we are grateful that the HP Company Foundation is committing aid to the Typhoon Ketsana (Ondoy) relief efforts,” said David Tan, managing director, HP Philippines, in a press statement. “Our thoughts go out to those coping with the aftermath of this disaster.”
According to Wikipedia, at least 337 deaths were officially reported from the typhoon as of October 9, with damage estimated at nearly $700 million.
HP's foundation aims to provide help and support by providing supplies and technical assistance to areas hit by disasters. In this particular case, HP also has extensive company operations in the region and many of its own employees have been directly affected by the typhoon event. The company said it is continuing to work closely with local authorities and agencies to give assistance to employees and their families, as well as initiating its own support efforts, which include house cleanup projects and shelter assistance.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has launched an urgent call for donations and those wishing to help can visit their Web site for donation and support information.
