Inside & Out: Hannah Teter
Some people just like to do things big. Hannah Teter happens to be one of those people. When this gal snowboards, she does it Olympic style — and not simply to medal, but also to be a positive role model. When she makes maple syrup, she does it to help the homeless living with AIDS in Kirindon, a small village in Kenya. And, now when Hannah Teeter wears underwear, she'll be doing it to support Doctors Without Borders for their work in Haiti.
The 23-year-old began her professional snowboarding career in 2002. By 2006, she took home Olympic gold in Turin for the womens halfpipe. When the games ended, Teter applied that same passion and drive to her philanthropic work. On her website for Hannah's Gold, the nonprofit she started three years ago, she says she chose to sponsor Kirindon "because they were a suffering area at the time I was looking to help out in a big way." Teter decided to sell maple syrup and put the profits toward helping the people of Kirindon. Over the past three years, Hannah's Gold, a World Vision partner, has brought tremendous relief to this small village in the form of everything from HIV treatment to school fees to farming supplies.
But, as one might suspect, Teter had even bigger ideas for the village. In 2009, the Vermont-native donated all her prize winnings to bring plots of land and potable water to Kirindon. Fellow Vermonters Ben & Jerry liked Teter's idea so much that they created a flavor in her honor, aptly named Maple Blondie, a portion of sales supports Hannah's Gold.
Teter's most recent big idea came after Port-au-Prince was rocked by an earthquake: sell cute underwear to help support relief efforts in Haiti. And so, Sweet Cheeks was born. For every $18 pair bought, $5 will go to Doctors Without Borders. The brand has clever tags like "Peace of Ass," "Giving Back While Covering Our Backside" and "Panties with Purpose." Each month Sweet Cheeks will roll out a new style to support a different cause. April's design is dedicated to Airline Ambassadors.
And, as if all that weren't enough, Teter is also a spokesperson for Boarding for Breast Cancer B4BC. If you can keep up with her, Hannah Teter is definitely one worth watching.
