Let Your Computer Process Change

We all use computers. A lot. These days, we really can't help it. They're tied in to nearly everything we do. And every time a newer model comes out, it's safe to say it's going to have a processor that works faster and does more than the previous model's processor. The thing is, when we leave our computers idling, these quicker processors are still technically doing something. That means a lot of processing happening that's going to waste. Until now, that is.

According to this GreenBiz.com article, Intel recently launched a new Facebook application called Progress Thru Processors, which, when downloaded to your computer, has your spare processor power actually directed toward helping research that could change lives. So while your computer is idling, the application will use those spare computing cycles to power three different Web-based projects:

Climateprediction.net, which tracks the Earth's climate to try and anticipate any changes.Rosetta@home, which is trying to find cures for major human diseases.Africa@home, which is battling malaria in Africa.

This "volunteer computing" idea came about with the knowledge that many people's computers are kept idle, while still online, and could thus be used to help projects such as the above three that are doing important research requiring a tremendous amount of computer power. And all you have to do is download a simple application.

Much like Intel's Small Things Challenge (which I blogged about here), the company realizes big differences can happen by doing the littlest things. Since you're already on Facebook (you know you are), go to the Progress Thru Processors page and help make some big changes possible. Of course, if it's a work computer, check with your IT department first before downloading the application.
