Jane Lynch Hosts the Do Something Awards

jane_lynch.jpg"This is the Do Something Awards, am I right, people? Thank you so much, ladies, you've made my narcissistic dreams come true. Welcome to the Do Something Awards, the only award show that's going to heaven. Tonight we're honoring people who are famous for doing something good, and some young people who are going to be made famous for doing great things for our world. ... I've actually got a long and distinguished track record in public record... Eight years in the jungle, and I'm still known as the 'other Jane.'" -- Jane Lynch's opening monologue at the Do Something Awards on July 19

When it came time to choose the host for this year's Do Something Awards, the award show hosted by the public service website DoSomething.org that honors those who are committed to bettering their communities and the world at large, Jane Lynch was the obvious choice. She may play a diabolical tyrant as cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester on Glee, and this may have been her first venture into the world of award show hosting, but in real life, Lynch is well-known for her commitment to many causes.

Not only does Lynch help support causes such as Alzheimer's and other aging diseases, she received an award in March 2010 from Outfest, which promotes the fair representation of the LGBTQ community in the media. This past June, the actress married her longtime partner Lara Embry, and she continues to help support gay rights.

When the New York Post asked the comedian about some of her favorite causes and the importance of Do Something's work, she had this to say: "I like any kind of organization that gets in there and gets their hands dirty, like the no kill shelter organizations. It’s important help those that are vulnerable —kids, animals and also gay and lesbian kids. They need to know that there’s somebody out there that cares about them. I always look up online to make sure the charity actually puts the money in the hands of the needy. It's important to make sure the money raised doesn’t go to overheard or new stationary."

Perfect advice from the perfect host for the evening. Glee also took home the award for Do Something TV Show. Kudos, Ms. Lynch!
