Jay-Z, Coldplay Pay Tribute to Beastie Boys
You know you're loved when both Jay-Z and Coldplay pay you tribute.
That's what happened to the Beastie Boys at last week's All Points West festival, an NYC-area event they were supposed to headline on Friday night. Things changed a few weeks ago, however, when member Adam Yauch (MCA) learned that he had a cancerous tumor in his throat. While they caught it early enough that the rapper will pull through, the group unfortunately had to bow out of the festival at the last minute. As previously reported on Tonic.com, Jay-Z stepped up at the last minute to fill in for the Beastie Boys, which had hip-hop fans scrambling for additional tickets. On Friday night, Hova showed further respect to Yauch and Co. by performing a powerful cover of the trio's late '80s hit "No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn." That tribute, however, was not the last.
Coldplay closed out the festival on Sunday night, and while Chris Martin certainly thankfully wasn't going to rap, he showed his love with a piano ballad cover of the Beastie Boys' original hit, "Fight For Your Right (To Party)." As you might imagine, the tribute originally brought laughs, but the fans got into the spirit and sung along in honor of the stricken rapper.
Anyone who's experienced cancer within their family circle knows just how difficult it can be. It's great to see two epic artists from different genres send out to their love and support to Yauch and his family. Here's hoping the rapper gets well soon.
