Joan Rivers Delivers Love
Joan Rivers in a hairnet? It might not seem like an obvious fashion choice for the comedian and red carpet fashion critic, but the funny lady donned one more than willingly this week as she helped prepare and hand over the 10 millionth meal for God’s Love We Deliver. For more than 20 years, the New York City-based nonprofit has provided nutritious meals for people unable to prepare food for themselves because of a serious illness.
Rivers, a 15-year God’s Love board member, prepared the meal on Tuesday with help from friends like Anna Wintour (no word on whether the fashion maven also donned a hairnet) and socialite Blaine Trump and delivered it to a homebound woman in SoHo. During a ceremony Tuesday John Demsey, Chairman of the M·A·C AIDS Fund and Group President of Estee Lauder Companies, presented a $250,000 check to God's Love We Deliver in honor of Joan Rivers' win on Celebrity Apprentice.
"How wonderful that New Yorkers take care of their own,” Rivers said after the ceremony and meal delivery. “Even though this ten-millionth custom meal was made thanks to big donors such as M·A·C Cosmetics ... the majority of those ten million meals came from five, ten and twenty-five dollar donations."
God’s Love We Deliver launched in 1986 as a way to deliver much-needed meals to New York City residents living with AIDS. In 2001 it expanded its mission to help people living with other serious illnesses. Last year, the non-profit prepared and delivered more than 800,000 meals to more than 1,600 clients, a 20-percent increase from the previous year — and they have no plans to slow down.
