McEmpire Strikes Back
Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin has several statues throughout the former Soviet Union, and while some places tear them down, others are divided about what to do with these statues. That is the case with the famous statue in Yalta, Crimea, an autonomous region that's technically part of the Ukraine. Russian is spoken more than Ukrainian, and many of the citizens feel a strong bond for their former overlords. What about the rest of the Ukrainians in Crimea who hated life under Soviet rule? Well, they came up with a solution. The Lenin statue, which kicks off the seaside promenade, was given a very specific image in its sight line -- the Golden Arches.

You've got to love it. They may not have the popular support to tear down the statue, but the anti-Soviets can take joy in knowing Lenin must look at Mickey D's 24 hours a day. It's a beautiful thing. I swore I wouldn't visit a McDonalds on my current global trek, but I had to visit this one in honor of its great positioning. Their ice cream cones never tasted so good!
