Library-by-Mail

The Public Library in Youngstown, Ohio, recently started the "Library-By-Mail" program, which sends library books and provides other services to all qualifying home-bound and handicapped residents in the Mahoning Valley free of charge.

Materials available include books and magazines, movies on DVD or videocassette, CDs, books on tape, and descriptive videos for the visually impaired. The service also provides bar magnifiers and prism glasses for those who request them.

Libraries here started outreach initiatives in 1971, and have since been dedicated to bringing the gift of reading and knowledge to all residents in the county. Now the services include not only the Library-By-Mail program, but the library also accepts and processes applications for the Talking Book Program from the Library of Congress and provides speakers to talk to groups about the program and carry how fin and enjoyable reminiscence programs using bifocal kits and other materials.

However, the status of programs like this one is uncertain with proposed funding cuts for libraries in Ohio. But as budget discrepancies ensue, programs like this one hopefully will still continue. Even in the face of significant budget cuts, the libraries are dedicated to providing enriching services to all residents.

If you happen to live in the Youngstown area and you or someone you know may qualify, you can find out more information here.
