Miracle Girl Believes Becoming A Doctor Is Her Destiny
Was it destiny that eight-year-old Destiny Antonio survived a seven-story fall out of her Bronx apartment window? We might never know, but the spunky elementary school student says the experience has made her sure about one thing: her career.
"I'm going to be a doctor," she declared to The New York Post as she recovered at a children's hospital in Westchester. "If someone is sick, I can help them."
Right now, Destiny is learning first-hand how much doctors can make a difference. They placed metal rods and pins in her hip to help it stay in place while it heals, and she's receiving therapy that they hope will allow her to walk again -- not that Destiny's worried.
"It hurts a lot," she admitted. "But I know that I am going to walk again."
She says it with a certainty that nobody had last month when she made the horrifying tumble. She was in her apartment and ran toward the window when she heard an early-morning commotion. She leaned through a broken window and then woke up on the ground after briefly falling unconscious.
"I remember people tapping me, asking me if I could move," Destiny told the Post. "All I remember is my sister and my brother were standing over me and they were telling me, 'I love you' and 'Are you all right?'"
She was alive -- but not exactly all right. Medics took her to Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx, where she remained for several weeks before being transported to Blythedale Children's Hospital on Friday. Now, she continues to recover and passes time by playing with dolls, watching "Hannah Montana" and daydreaming about becoming a doctor one day.
A dream that is perhaps her destiny.
