Taiwanese Lottery Winner Gives More Than $3 Million to Charity
Back in June, a woman won the Taiwan Power Lottery of NT$490 million (approximately $15.3 million American). This would have been an amazing story in and of itself, because the woman from Taichung City had been jobless for the past two years. But a week ago, the woman (who chose to remain anonymous when she won the lottery) decided to give NT$100 million ($3.13 million American) to 19 different charities.
As the China Post reported, the donation made Taiwanese history because it was the largest sum ever given to the most number of charities. The article noted that the money can help nearly 44,000 people, and the donations "will help fund treatment for children experiencing developmental delay, scholarships for disadvantaged students and disability aids and equipment for the mentally and physically handicapped, such as buses with easy access."
This great act of generosity comes on the heels of another similar act in Taiwan. Last September, a man who won the lottery gave NT$210 million to 14 charity organizations, which set the mark for the most money given by a lottery winner. But no matter who wins the lottery in Taiwan, charities come out ahead. Of the money used to buy lottery tickets from the Taiwan Lottery Company, 40 percent of it goes to charitable causes.
