Luau on the Mainland
Ever since President Obama took up residency at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, things have been done just a little bit differently. And this year's Congressional picnic is no exception. Tonight, the Hawaiian native will host the first-ever luau at the White House.
"President Obama is bringing the Hawaii family spirit of 'ohana' to the White House and to all Americans through the first White House luau," said John Monahan, president and chief executive of the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, in a news release.
The annual event is traditionally known for its relaxed vibe – even with Washington's top players mingling on the South Lawn. This year attendees can expect the same mellow atmosphere. Honolulu's award-winning chef Alan Wong will fly in to prepare the food to be served 'ohana' style (that's family style to you mainlanders).
But the island fun doesn't stop there. The evening will also feature performances by 20 dancers and musicians, showcasing the region's rich cultural heritage of hula. Things could get pretty wild – rumor has it that the White House made a last minute request for Samoan fire-knife dancers.
