The Lviv 44

There's a famous tale about house No. 3 on the Rynok Square. Many years ago, a poor worker fell in love with the daughter of this Baroque-style home, but her merchant father had already lined her up with a wealthier suitor. The father even threw an engagement ball at the home to celebrate the upcoming nuptials, but the young laborer slipped in to see his lost love. The father discovered his presence and attacked the young man, who had no choice but to fight back. The merchant was injured and would soon die, but he also saw the error of his ways. He called for the boy and his daughter and gave his blessing for them to marry.

This is just one of many stories behind the popular 44 homes that surround the Rynok Square in Lviv. It's also what makes the main market square one of the most popular in the Ukraine and Eastern Europe.

There's also the Black Mansion at No. 4 next to the merchant's house, and the Italian Yard museum at No. 6. There's a very old department store at No. 32, while the pink House of Seasons is decorated with the zodiac signs. Today, many of the homes have been turned into museums, some of which focus on more quirky topics like old furniture (No. 10). Some of the homes date back to the 15th century, though most were built (or re-built) within the past century or two.

The local hostels had yet to hear of an English-language guide to these houses so check online before visiting. It makes a visit to the square that much more interesting.
