Lookout Lviv!

The castle might not be intact anymore, but Castle Hill is still the best place to look out over the beautiful western Ukrainian city of Lviv. Sitting on a heavily forested area more than 1,200 feet above sea level, the hilltop provides panoramic views of the river, main square and everything else you'd want to see from on high.

The earliest castles were built here in the 13th century, and since they were built with wood, invading forces easily burned them down. The first brick building appeared over a century later under Polish rule. In the 19th century, a new castle was built -- the ruins of which remain today -- and they added many trees and even added a park. There has been talk of rebuilding a castle again, but for now, people are happy with the amazing view, recreation areas and gorgeous greenery.

Castle Hill is close to the city center, and while it's a bit of a workout, most people simply walk to the top enjoying the lush walkways. There are lots of souvenirs and refreshments up top near the observation area, but most people are just up there snapping away on the cameras, which is exactly what I was doing. It's definitely worth the trip.
