South Carolina Schools Get a Helping Hand
South Carolina's been having a rough time of it, so much so that Jon Stewart devoted an entire story to the state's interesting news of late on Monday night's The Daily Show. That's why it's nice to see a company stepping up and bringing some good news to the Palmetto State.
Michelin North America announced the Michelin Challenge Education program, which helps public elementary schools in communities where the company has a facility. There are eight facilities in the state participating, including the company's corporate headquarters in Greenville, and each of the facilities is adopting one public school in need. The program gives the nearly 8,000 Michelin employees in the state the opportunity to contribute in improving public education. They can do so by mentoring, tutoring or volunteering at a nearby public school.
According to this PR Newswire press release, "For the past decade, South Carolina elementary school students have consistently scored below the national average in math, science, reading and writing scores, according to the US Department of Education's state report card." Clearly, assistance is needed, and this type of one-on-one attention will be especially valuable for the chosen schools' students. The list of the schools being helped, including those in Kentucky and Alabama, is available on the press release.
