Mind the (Designer) Gap
If you're a loyal Vogue reader (aka an Anna Wintouraholic), you're probably aware of the magazine's fervent support of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, otherwise known as the CFDA. This New York-based group helps support American designers (particularly young and emerging ones) through mentoring, networking and lobbying on their behalf. The group also hands out annual awards — the fashion industry's equivalent of the Oscars — which are being given out in New York tonight. For the last few years, Vogue and the CFDA have partnered up to present the Fashion Fund, an annual competition for young designers. And luckily — for those of us who don't have a few grand to spare on designer originals — part of the Fund's initiative is for its winners to create a few limited edition items for the Gap, all of which are pretty darn affordable for designerwear. There's always a theme — it's been twists on a classic white shirt for the past two years — and this time around the pieces are unique takes on a perennial American classic: khakis. This year's winners aren't exactly household names (yet). The best known is Alexander Wang, pictured with models wearing some of his Gap designs. But each has plenty of critical acclaim and the blessings of the Voguettes. Everything goes on sale tomorrow at select Gap stores and online at Gap.com ... and, if this year is like the last couple, everything will sell out fast. So, now's the time to pull out your gold card and go, um, wacky for khaki. Will this make khaki cool again? We'll see.
