Getting That Gleeful Feeling
The Glee Club is supposed to be dorky, but these days, everyone is trying to befriend them — at least the TV version of the singing geek squad.
Reuters reports that the growing popularity of the Fox television show "Glee," and the musical numbers cast members perform on the show have musicians and record execs salivating at the chance to have their songs given the Glee treatment. The show draws nearly nine million viewers a week.
The popularity of the show with the music business points to the industry’s growing realization that TV is the place to be. Before "Glee," shows like "The O.C." and other CW Network hits were responsible for introducing relatively unknown bands to new audiences.
How popular is the show with the industry? Madonna, for one, wants in on the Club. She recently offered up her entire catalog to the show. And we can see why. After cast members covered Rihanna's "Take a Bow,” sales of the song shot up 189 percent. The cast’s version of Journey’s "Don’t Stop Believin'" went gold with over 500,000 copies sold.
So now that the Glee Club is getting its due, does this mean there’s a chance for the band geeks, too? Because, this one time at band camp ...
