Not-So-Crazy Cat Lady

We feel it's a little unfair to dub any middle-aged woman with multiple cats a "crazy cat lady," so we were pleased to see New Yorker Tammy Cross demonstrated that women with felines can actually be pretty amazing people.

According to an article in the New York Times, Tammy Cross runs Kitten Little Rescue, an organization that rescues sick, abandoned or abused kittens and tries to find them adoptive families or foster homes. For nearly 20 years, Cross has nursed numerous kittens back to health, all from the confines of her one-bedroom apartment on New York City's Upper West Side.

The sheer number of cats Cross has helped over the years is mind-boggling: At any given time, six to 22 kittens call her 450-square foot apartment home. Healthy kitties take over the living room, while those that are sick or very young are housed in the bathroom and bottle-fed by Cross. And despite the tight quarters, Cross always finds room for another furball. She sometimes receives calls from the city's Animal Care and Control and takes in kitties that would otherwise be euthanized.

As if caring for all those cats wasn't amazing enough, Cross doesn't even have a stove in her apartment. But even without the appliance, Cross told the New York Times she manages to cook complete Thanksgiving dinners for a dozen of her volunteers using only a microwave, hot plate and toaster oven.

We're not sure which is more shocking, 22 cats in a 450-square foot apartment, or cooking a Thanksgiving dinner sans stove. But props to Tammy Cross for pulling it all off.
