NYC's Unlikely Catwalk
The Highline in New York City, officially known as High Line Park, is an old railroad turned urban oasis on Manhattan's West Side. The park hovers 30 feet in the air and stretches from 14th Street up to 34th Street, and what a stretch it is. The promenade has become a destination for young and old, but especially the fashionable and hip. The New York Times' Bill Cunningham photographed this sudden style mile to show that when New Yorkers want to strut their stuff, it can be on a sidewalk feeling groovy, or even high above the city.
The High Line walk has a good mix: highbrow fashion meets a downtown edge, with enough flouncy tunics, breezy shifts and slicked back coifs which promise to keep the boardwalk more like a catwalk.
Mark my words: the Sex and the City sequel (May 2010), will, for sure, have to feature it. So, you know what that means — get there while you still can.
See and hear Bill Cunningham's take on the "new" form of Fifth Avenue here.
