One Small Click for Mankind
The Small Things Challenge website leads off with a jarring pair of numbers, according to data from the United Nations:
"At least 80 percent of humanity lives on less than $10 a day, while 75 million children worldwide are not in school."
Intel wants you to help them put a dent into both of those statistics, and that's what the Small Things Challenge is all about. Every time you click on the orange bar at the website, Intel donates 25 cents to support Kiva and Save the Children. It's that easy. If enough people get to clicking, that can become up to $300,000 in 2009. And that's in addition to the $100 million Intel is already investing this year in education programs.
Kiva is a microloan site that aims to lend money to entrepreneurs, in the hopes of helping them get themselves out of poverty. Save the Children is an independent organization that aims to help children in need around the world.
Along with clicking at the site, you can go to Kiva or Save the Children's websites and make a contribution there. In addition, Intel is working with Global Giving, providing them with $50,000, and any donations you make to the Technology for Education fund will help support organizations working in developing countries, using technology to improve the quality of education. And don't forget to tell people you know about the Small Things Challenge, to make sure that Intel reaches their goal.
