The Fight Against Hunger Just Got a Little Sweeter

On Friday, the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization estimated that approximately one in six people are undernourished (that's more than 1 billion people worldwide), a historic high, so it's apparent how widespread the problem of hunger continues to be. Thankfully, the fight to end hunger recently got some more assistance. It was announced that the PepsiCo Foundation, the philanthropic arm of PepsiCo, has stepped in to form a strategic partnership with the U.N.'s World Food Programme (WFP), the world's largest humanitarian group battling hunger.

This partnership will attempt to fortify the WFP's ability to deliver both food and relief to the parts of the world that need it most. The PepsiCo Foundation, established in 1962, committed $2.2 million toward a program where PepsiCo's global logistics experts will aid the WFP. That help includes strengthening the group's response to the increasing hunger needs worldwide and improving how it reacts to crises.

The WFP is helping people in nearly 80 countries and aiming to feed 105 million people in 2009, so there's a lot of work to be done, but at least they'll have another valuable ally in that fight.
