Career Girls Have Gone to Pot.

In a names-have-been-changed piece in Marie Claire, the concept of the "female stoner" is examined. These are successful, driven career-minded gals who, in turning a stereotype on its head, don't want to go out and drain martini glasses full of Cosmpolitans, but instead, light up a joint, pack a bong or indulge in any of the other activities you can call getting high.

That's why Marie Claire, one conjectures, is writing about it: because it's a double-stereotype. These are girl potheads, but not the unmotivated, sit-around-and-eat-cake-batter potheads (as in, not the underachieving, college-age potheads one tends to picture).

Some of them are lawyers, or professionals who work 15-hour days. Or mothers who host dinner pot-parties with their husbands, complete with "dessert and bong hits."

But here's the harsh toke: marijuana is still considered illegal by the federal government, although, as MC points out, it's already been decriminalized in 13 states, not to mention, as easy as "ordering a pizza," with colleagues in cubicles referring each other to their dealer as they would a hairdresser.

"...While it is the most widely used controlled substance in the country, marijuana remains illegal in the eyes of the federal government-in the same class as LSD or heroine-regardless of state laws that regulate its usage. More than 90 percent of Fortune 500 companies, including American Express, General Electric, and Goldman Sachs, subject job applicants to drug tests that, among other things, probe for THC, the psychoactive component in pot."

So, double-standard debunked? The truth appears to be that highly social, motivated (not underachieving) females (not just boys) get high too. But regardless of gender or SAT scores, like Kurt Cobain once sang, just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not watching you.
