Feelin' Young in Old Town
Welcome to the first stop on any visit to Bohemia.
Located in the very heart of Prague, the Old Town Square is a bustling city center packed with every type of restaurant, shop and must-see historic attraction. The square is magical and romantic, and several of the country's key historic moments happened on these very cobblestone streets. If you want architectural sights, the Square does not disappoint. There's the brilliant moving art of the Astronomical Clock, the classic Baroque architecture of St. Nicholas Church and the looming gothic spirals of Týn Cathedral. Music lovers will appreciate the neoclassical Estate Theatre, the venue where Mozart's Don Giovanni opera debuted, and one of the Square's galleries was exhibiting Salvador Dali at the time of my visit. There's also a huge statue of Jan Hus, a religious reformer who was martyred for his beliefs on a burning stake. While
naturally a bit touristy, there are dozens of restaurants throughout, most of which have tables set up right on the open-air Square itself. Whether you want a tourist-traditional blend of Czech cuisine or carb-overloading Italian, it's all here. There's also no shortage of sweets, from ice cream gelato vendors to designer Dutch chocolate shops. Old Town Square is also popular on holidays, whether its holiday markets or New Year's Eve celebrations, and historically it's been the site of many mass protests.
All this said, here's a suggestion. Guys, you want to take your wife or girlfriend on a romantic trip that will wow her? Venice and Paris are naturals, but they're also no-brainers. Take your girl (or guy if you're a Sugar Momma) to Prague, get a hotel near Old Town Square, dine at one of the many restaurants and enjoy the fresh air as you look out a stunning architecture in every direction. From there, it's just a short stroll to the captivating Charles Bridge and many exciting bars.
Prague is a truly Romantic city, and Old Town Square is its heart.
