Fruity Find
A Golden Delicious apple split perfectly down the middle into red and green is the talk of the town – and country – in England.
The amazing apple is the fruit of Devon farmer Ken Morrish's labors – well, his and genetics. Scientists say the half-and-half coloring is thanks to a very rare and random mutation, according to the UK's The Telegraph.
Morrish, who's been growing apples for 45 years in his garden in southwest England, stepped outside to pick some apples for his sister-in-law when he found the freaky fruit. (To see a photo, click here.)
"It's truly amazing,” Morrish, 72, told the Telegraph. "I couldn't believe my eyes. The red and green split through the stem is totally perfect – as if I've painted it.” (Morrish actually is a retired painter and decorator.)
He added: "It's a genuine one-off and none of us have ever seen an apple like it before."
It’s so rare, in fact, that people from around the county have been coming by to snap photos.
No word yet on what Morrish will – or can – do with the apple of his eye (presumably it will rot soon enough), but currently it’s in his refrigerator.
“I won’t be letting it out of my sight,” he told the UK's The Sun.
