Recession 101
Never have we loved a billboard like "Recession 101." The campaign was inspired by an anonymous East Coast donor who was feeling depressed about the economy. The messages are intended to provide a collective attitude adjustment, or at the very least, a little levity. A thousand billboards are scheduled to go up across the nation.
"Bill Gates started Microsoft during a recession."
But it's no small task attempting to put a smile on the face of a state with the nation's third highest unemployment rate, which may be why the campaign kicked off in Rhode Island. But some people claim a billboard simply isn't enough. According to the Associated Press, Gail Robnett said, "You're not paying attention to stuff like that when you're trying to put groceries on the table." She makes a good point.
"Self worth is greater than net worth."
But Leonard Lardaro, an economist with the University of Rhode Island, encourages people to hang onto their hope. And Paul Sullivan, an employee of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce says, "History has proven that we get into recessions and we get out of them. Whether it's perception or reality, we have to think this too shall pass."
"Stop obsessing about economy, you're scaring the children."
Lost on some, embraced by others, comfort remains in knowing that someone with a generous spirit is out there keeping the faith. Rock on, awesome anonymous person.
