Moving Green: Advancing Past the Cardboard Box

Whenever moving from one domicile to the next, boxes are a necessity. In the past, I've asked managers at grocery stores for empty ones, hit up my friends for their extras and bought boxes from various box retailers. I've even, yes, done the dumpster dive, in my younger, more, uh, frugal days. While the way I've acquired boxes has changed over time, one thing that hasn't changed is the type of boxes — cardboard. Which means a tree has been cut down to make said box. Not ecologically friendly. That's why a company like Rent-A-Green Box piqued my interest. The founder, Spencer Brown, came up with the Recopack, which stands for "recycled ecological packing solution." The Recopack is a box made from recycled plastic trash at local landfills. They come in three sizes, are delivered to your door in one of the company's vegetable oil and bio-fueled trucks a week before you move, and are picked up two weeks later. In fact, all the products the company uses are made from trash, including "recocubes," packing cubes that can become compost, and "poopy pallets," pallets that are actually made from recycled baby diapers.Currently, the service is available in Southern California, including all of Orange County and Los Angeles County, and select parts of the Inland Empire and San Diego County. But they're expanding nationwide over the next three years, so keep an eye out for their bright green boxes.
