One Stop for Help
It can be difficult to find help during a recession, especially when most people face a slew of problems all at the same time -- making enough money to pay rent, getting health benefits, finding a job, caring for children -- the list goes on and on.
That's where SingleStop comes in. According to a New York Daily News story, the nonprofit aims to serve as a one-stop location to help New Yorkers in need with anything and everything they need to get back on their feet. The organization's 59 sites in all five boroughs can provide everything from free diapers to information about health benefits and even legal and financial advice.
And since the recession hit, New Yorkers have definitely needed SingleStop's help: From March 2008 to July 2008, the organization's headquarters registered 146 people. During the same period this year, that location registered 336 people, a 130 percent increase.
SingleStop was founded by the Robin Hood Foundation, a nonprofit that donates millions of dollars each year to New York City organizations that help combat poverty. SingleStop also partners with various city agencies.
