To Make a Big Difference, Scale Up

The question is: how can we best affect major social change? The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), Growth Philanthropy Network and Duke University think they have the answer. They are launching a unique multisector initiative to support high-impact social programs, according to a RWJF press release.

The Social Impact Exchange, a.k.a "The Exchange," joins cross-sectoral members, including philanthropists, practitioners and researchers, to study, identify and support the best social-service programs and fund their expansion to much larger scales. The group will also host an annual contest in which to vet programs and provide a vehicle for financial and in-kind awards.

The program reflects the fact that some in the social sector are getting tired of piecemeal efforts and minor victories. The program begins with 150 members who are interested in learning about effective programs and making deals to expand them for the biggest impact.

"The Exchange gives our sector a chance to learn together and develop the knowledge to effectively engage in nurturing and spreading our most effective social programs and solutions," said Jane Isaacs Lowe, a team director at RWJF.
