It's Cooler Than Ever to Share What You're Up To

Well one thing is for sure these days; people want the world to know what they're up to every day, and they're embracing social networking tools such as Twitter to spread the news.

A Pew Internet & American Life Project survey released yesterday provides some interesting insight on why people are tweeting and who's tweeting the most. About 19 percent of Internet users report using some type of online status update service to let others know what they're doing.

That's a big jump over this past April and last December, when just 11 percent said they were using a status-update service.

The growth, according to the report, is coming from three demographic groups: young Web users (those under the age of 44), mobile device users and social network users.

Status-update service use is also tied to online access and the more devices in play, the more likely people are using Twitter, states the report. Of those polled, 39 percent of Internet users have four or more Internet-connected gadgets and devices. Just 10 percent have one device, 19 percent have two and 28 percent have three.

When it comes to user age, the average Twitter fan is 31 years old. At social networks LinkedIn and Facebook, the average user age is 39 and 33, respectively. MySpace users are the youngest, averaging 26 years old.
