Spice Girls to Rock the Cup?
The Spice Girls already had their reunion tour, but the '90s icons might not be entirely re-retired just yet. The BBC has reported that Ginger, Posh, Scary, Baby and Sporty might get together once again for a June 10 charity concert in Johannesburg to kick off the 2010 World Cup … because nothing says girl power like a bunch of drunk football fans punching each other to "Wannabe."
The full lineup, including whether or not the Girls actually participate, will be announced in January. Kevin Wall of Live 8 and Live Earth acclaim will produce the event.
"We are going to have a lot of the major African artists and really it's going to be about Africa so the slots for international artists are a rarity," said Wall, before presumably shouting, "So tell me what you want, what you really, really want."
Ticket proceeds from the World Cup concert will benefit FIFA's 20 Centres For 2010, a campaign to build "twenty Football for Hope Centres for public health, education and football across Africa. The centres will address local social challenges in disadvantaged areas and improve education and health services for young people."
In addition to the concert, FIFA has agreed to donate $500 for every goal scored in the FIFA World Cup qualifying rounds. FIFA's contribution will be at least $1 million of the $10 million needed to build all 20 centers. Here's hoping for some high scoring games!
