St. Patrick's Day Salute to the 'Irish' in the NBA
The Boston Celtics have always been associated with the Irish. According to SportsLogos.net, their original logo in 1946 was that of a clover, and by 1950, it had transitioned to that of a cheering, crowned leprechaun. That became a leprechaun spinning a basketball on his finger in 1968, a logo that continues to this day. The Celtics, fittingly, will be hosting the New York Knicks tonight in Boston, which will close out Boston's day-long St. Patrick's Day celebration, and you can be sure there will be a lot of green in the stands.
But the Boston Celtics don't have the market cornered when it comes to the Irish, as you can see in the fitting tribute to the NBA's other "Irish" players below (hat tip to The Basketball Jones):
Just remember, today, we're all a little bit Irish, as we celebrate St. Paddy's Day, the day named after one of the patron saints of Ireland that's become a celebration of all things Irish. So watch the NBA today and know that you're doing your part to celebrate Ireland, because all the teams are battling for their chance to win the NBA Championship and a trophy named after one Larry O'Brien, the former NBA commissioner who was born in the birthplace of basketball, Springfield, Mass., and is, yes, of Irish descent.
