State Radio Rocks Spring Break for Oxfam
It certainly sounds to us as though Boston-based rock trio State Radio has issued an open invitation to join in on what could be the hippest and most heart-filling spring break imaginable. What could possibly be better than a road-tripping week packed with live music and community outreach?
The band kicked things off in style at their sold-out appearance at the legendary Washington DC venue, The 9:30 Club, where they announced their 2010 campaign to raise money and awareness in support of the women of Sudan. Through a partnership with Oxfam America, the band's Calling All Crows service organization has staked out a goal to raise $100,000 through their Trees, Training and Donkey Carts initiative.
Currently underway until Mar. 7 is the band's Alternative Spring Break Tour: Destination New Orleans! The members of the band are joined by fans who share the drive and dedication to serve others on a multi-city adventure — Little Rock, Tulsa, Dallas, Austin and on to The Big Easy. By day, serving others is the order of business and afterward, it's all a big festive music-packed party.
State Radio demonstrates an inspiring knack for integrating their musical creativity with a deeply-felt set of values that attaches great importance to making the time to make things better. Speaking on behalf of the trio, Chris Taillie of Shore Line Media paints a picture of an ongoing, tireless flurry of outreach activity:
"10,000 hours of community service in 2010. That's the goal for Boston revolution rock trio State Radio's humanitarian organization Calling All Crows. In 2009 the group, with the help of over 600 volunteers, logged 3,000 hours of service and donated $100,000 to Oxfam America's Darfur Stoves Project. So far in 2010, the band and their fans have helped clean a beach in San Diego, sorted donations at a Food Bank in Salt Lake City, helped paint a school in Philly and much more."
Even if you're not able to throw a duffel bag into the car and hit the road to join in, we hope you'll feel sufficiently inspired to get to know State Radio better. Check out their song "Calling All Crows" named for their outreach initiative, and head to this page on the Calling All Crows website, and join us as we follow the adventure as it unfolds this week.
