The Internet’s Best Summer Ever

Are you good when you’re online? And no, I don’t mean do you stay away from the sites inappropriate for the office environment or limit your surfing to times when there really isn’t anything else you should be doing. What I mean is: Are you a generous Web user? A person who uses your online connectivity for the good of others?If not, then change that to a “not yet.” Here’s your chance! No better way to kick off my work on the new Social Responsibility section of Tonic than by announcing the first-ever large-scale, long-term charitable campaign being conducted entirely online. It’s the Summer of Social Good Charity Drive! This innovative initiative, launched by Mashable, the Social Media Guide, on June 1 and running through August 28, aims to harness the networking power of Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, blogs and other similar online media to raise money for selected NGOs. All proceeds will be split four ways among the Humane Society, LIVESTRONG, Oxfam America and WWF.The campaign will conclude with the Social Good Conference on August 28 in New York City to highlight the selected charities and social media platforms. The event will feature keynote speakers on topics relating to “social media for social good,” with all proceeds from ticket sales donated to charity.Looks like this summer with be the best season the Internet has ever seen.
