Superman Comic Book to Help Family Avoid Foreclosure
The Man of Steel has saved a few people in his day. For one family facing foreclosure, he would come to the rescue again, but this time, it was via a comic book.
As Asylum.com reported, a family was packing up everything, since their house — which had been in the family since the 1950s — was being foreclosed upon. Then, they came across a box filled with comic books. The box, which belonged to the wife's father, happened to include one comic book in particular. None other than Action Comics #1, the debut of Superman in comic books, and the most valuable of them all (and, yes, the photo is the Lego version). When they realized what they'd stumbled upon, they got in touch with Stephen Fishler, a co-owner of two comic book stores in New York.
Fishler was dubious, mainly because, "'99.9 percent' of similar calls he receives turn out to be about reprints," but when they texted him with a photo of the comic book, Fishler realized it was the real deal. And if anyone would know, it's Fishler, who's been responsible for two record-breaking sales of the famed title. The first one sold in February for $1 million, followed by another sale in March for $1.5 million.
The family's comic book likely won't fetch as much, but that's no reason for concern. It was supposed to have been graded over the weekend at Comic-Con, and Fishler estimated it would earn a VG+ (or Very Good) when it comes to the comic book's condition. Assuming it does get that rating, Fishler estimated that, when he puts it up for auction at ComicConnect (one of the stores he co-owns), it should end up in the neighborhood of a quarter million dollars.
While the family wishes to remain anonymous, Asylum was able to get a quote through Fishler from the owner, who said the family was "still a little shell-shocked about finding this book. I was so nervous when I realized what it was worth. I know I am very fortunate but I will be greatly relieved when this book finds a new home." And, more importantly, because of their fortuitous discovery, the family won't have to find their new home anytime soon.
