Have You Had "The Talk"?

Yes, it's awkward. No one wants to talk about it, but it has to be done. If left unguided, your kids could get into plenty of trouble.

We're talking about money (it's not always about sex). The financial crisis showed us that many adults didn’t know what they were doing with their dollars, so now, Marketplace reports, many are trying to instill fiscal responsibility in kids at an increasingly younger age.

Instead of making money a taboo subject — saying things like, “you should never ask someone how much they make” — some experts suggest sitting down with your kids and getting into the nitty gritty of personal finance. One high school economics teacher says that in addition to peppering his class lectures with personal finance tips, when he pays his bills at home, he has his kids take care of the check-writing.

And he’s not the only one. Some are also teaching their kids about how to allocate money for charity. Even rap stars are giving their kids lessons on financial responsibility.

If this is a reaction to the crisis we faced from being irresponsible with our money, we’d say, at least one good thing came of it.
