The Google Doodle Mystery Is Solved

For all those conspiracy theorists, sci-fi fanatics and true believers figuring that Google had to be up to something crazy with its Doodles in the past weeks, the mystery is over.

It was all just a very loving tribute and honorarium to writer H.G. Wells, according to the official Google blog.

"Inspiration for innovation in technology and design can come from lots of places; we wanted to celebrate H.G. Wells as an author who encouraged fantastical thinking about what is possible, on this planet and beyond. And maybe have some fun while we were doing it," wrote Google blogger Micheal Lopez, a Web design lead at the search titan.

And fun Google had.

From the first Doodle featuring a UFO streaming off with the letter "O" back on September 5, to last week's UFO circling crop circles on the Google logo, the blogsphere and Twitter world have been working overtime to figure out what Google was really up to and what it all meant.

Google even gives a hat's-off salute to the U.K.-based newspaper Guardian writer Alison Flood, who pretty much had the story back last Tuesday about what it all meant.

It was just a very special birthday nod to Herbert George Wells, author of the infamous "War of the Worlds" tome, who would have turned 143 today.

Happy birthday, Herbert, and thanks Google for making the Web fun and a more interesting place to visit.
