The Snuggie to Break World Record With Help from Cleveland Cavs
Remember on the original Snuggie commercial when the voiceover told us that the Snuggie is perfect for "staying cozy and warm at sporting events" as we're treated to an image of what appears to be a cult at a pee wee soccer match? Now picture that on a much, much, much larger scale. Such a large scale. In fact, this gathering of Snuggie-clad fans watching a sporting event will enter the Guinness Book of World Records for their, uh, feat.
The above scene is exactly what will happen on Friday, March 5, at a Cleveland Cavaliers game. According to NBA.com, "[T]he Cleveland Cavaliers and KeyBank are asking fans attending the Cavaliers vs. Detroit Pistons game to get to their seats early to help break the Guinness World Record for the 'largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets.'" Finally, the Snuggie will take its rightful place in human history in our most venerable book of records, and we have the NBA, the Cleveland Cavaliers and KeyBank to thank.
But how will they know an official record has been set, you ask? Well, for starters, there aren't currently any records out there for large gatherings of people wearing what are basically backwards bathrobes or fleece blankets. Nevertheless, to help everyone involved in their pursuit, the sellout crowd of 20,562 fans will all receive a complimentary limited edition Cleveland Cavaliers Snuggie, which will be draped on every seat in the arena prior to the game.
Fans will be required to wear their Snuggies for the first five minutes of the game, after which Guinness World Records Adjudicator Danny Girton will officially certify the new record. Once the record has officially been set, every fan that participated "will receive a commemorative magnet certificate that will acknowledge they are a Guinness World Record holder."
Well, we knew this day would come. First, the Snuggie hit the catwalk at New York Fashion Week. Then, they made Snuggies for pets. Next, it was the Snuggie suit. We all need to accept our fates, don an amorphous backwards fleece bathrobe, and join the record-breaking snug-fest. Oh, and if you'd like to sport the same version that'll be in Guinness, it's for sale on the Cavaliers website.
