Their Hearts Will Go On
As the stars of Titanic, Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio made lasting impressions on their fans, and even though their love story wasn't actually true (regardless of how much we wanted it to be), their story hasn't ended. In fact, a new philanthropic chapter has begun.
Kate and Leo, along with Titanic director James Cameron, have helped to support a fund to subsidize the nursing home fees for the last survivor from the Titanic, 97-year-old Millvina Dean. Dean was only 2 months old when the ocean liner sank, and last year, in order to pay her nursing home bills, resorted to selling some of her Titanic mementos.
Dean's father was one of the casualties on the ship, while she, her brother and her mother survived. Dean herself was saved when she was handed in a sack to someone in a lifeboat. (The sack was one of the mementos she sold, but fortunately, the person who purchased it gave it back to her.) She has been in the Southampton, England, nursing home since she broke her hip three years ago, but paying the fees has been a constant struggle.
Until now.
Kate, Leo, and their director each donated $10,000 to the fund, and the two stars released a joint statement saying, "We are honoured to contribute to the Millvina Fund. Our hope is that others will feel inspired by Millvina Dean’s remarkable story of survival and hope she can rest easier in knowing that her future will become more secure through this fund."
